TENNIS COURTS OPEN
On May 14th, Copperfield-Mahogany Community Association received communication from the City of Calgary indicating a recommendation “that you lock the courts and take the nets off to discourage play as they are an imminent safety hazard to players” with the damage being described as “At least 50% of the support posts for the perimeter fence are severely heaving, major damage to the actual sport surface, not only superficial, subsurface asphalt is damaged, you can see the water seeped through then freezing causing swelling and delaminating.”
Our due diligence to the safety of our residents required that we close the tennis courts until we could get a second opinion.
On June 2nd, the courts were inspected by an architectural firm. Their findings are listed in the attached image.
What does this mean? Essentially, the tennis courts are as damaged as the City of Calgary indicated, however this damage is NOT a safety risk to our residents. As such, the tennis courts will now be open again for use with repairs planned for 2021.
We will be marking a few identified problem spots with yellow paint:
– at the south end of the west court and under the net of the east court are small areas of asphalt pitting that can be trip hazards
– the support beam of the east net post in the west court can be a hazard as it is raised about 50mm above the surface
Please use extra care when using the courts and be aware of these hazards.
We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused and thank you for your patience while we properly investigated this issue.
If you have any questions or concerns about the tennis courts, please contact us at info@cmcommunity.ca or 403-532-8864.
Please note, the tennis courts are not City of Calgary assets. Although they reside on City-owned land, the Copperfield-Mahogany Community Association are responsible for their maintenance and upkeep, rules and regulations, who has access and when access is available. If the tennis courts are locked, please respect this, as replacing locks and chains that have been cut with bolt cutters comes directly out of the funds that would be used for community events.
I have some questions regarding the use of the tennis courts—
Are they reserved only and how is that done
Are balls and racquets available to rent
What are the hours of play
Hi Janine. The courts are first come first serve with a 30 minute limit when there’s a lineup. The courts are never locked, but please be mindful of neighbours and don’t play too early or late. You will need your own balls and racquets.
